Book Outlet Boxing Day Haul

Hello bookworms! A while back I did a post listing my Christmas Book Haul. During that, I mentioned that I had crushed the Book Outlet Boxing Day Sale, and well, that’s probably an understatement. Those boxes have finally all arrived so I thought I would quickly share that haul with you!

  

If you aren’t aware, Book Outlet is an incredible store that caters to book dragons like us who like to haul a lot of books. Basically, they get overstock or scratch and dent copies from larger retailers and sell them at HUGE discounts. I shop on bookoutlet.com all the time and have never once had a bad experience.

For this haul, I purchased 24 books in two separate orders. For the first order, I had a $25.00-off coupon and for the second order I had a $15.00-coupon. The highest price book I purchased was the one Adult Fiction book on the list; it came in at $7.99 and the lowest priced books, of which there were a few, were $3.19. The majority of the books were hardcover with a few paperbacks mixed in.

Top 5 Wednesday: Most Disappointing Reads of 2018

Hey, Nerds! It’s time for another edition of Top 5 Wednesday and today’s topic is to list your 5 most disappointing reads of 2018. It’s funny this came up because I have been thinking about this a lot lately. Over on BookTube (the bookie subculture of YouTube) everyone is posting their year-end videos and this is a topic that gets discussed a lot.

I am glad that I only have to choose five because, frankly, I really didn’t read that many that I would say ‘disappointed’ me. Also, I just want to note that these are not necessarily my lowest rated books, they are just the ones that I didn’t enjoy as much as I thought I would. Without further ado, let’s get into those disappointing reads:

  1. Wonderblood by Julia Whicker – This was actually the first book I completed in 2018 and man, did it let me down. (side note: I also think this was the first book that I ever reviewed from NetGalley) This was a post-apocalyptic, Adult, sci-fi mess, that I was really expecting so much more from. There was over-the-top brutality, right from the very start – and I read brutal things, guys, you know that – but this was just ‘shock value’ stuff. In my opinion, it was really detrimental to the overall story. There were a few cool things going on with religion and the politics but it was just so discombobulated story all the cool things got lost in the mess. I very, very, VERY generously gave this 3-stars but if I had it to do all over again, it would be a 2-star.
  2. The Dead Ringer (Agatha Raisin #29) by M.C. Beaton – I have loved reading Agatha Raisin books since I was a tween. In fact, I continue to read cozy mysteries to this day because they remind me of that time, of home. Agatha Raisin, in my memory, was one of those fun-loving, if be it a little wild, female amateur sleuths who always had a good mystery to solve; like Jessica Fletcher or Miss Marple. However, apparently over the years, Ms. Raisin has grown into a horribly negative and bitter old codger. I just did not enjoy this at all and was so disappointed with the writing and characters. It was nothing like the stories I remembered.
  3. A Study in Charlotte (Charlotte Holmes #1) by Brittany Cavallaro – This is easily the most popular book on this list and hopefully, if this is one of your favorite books, you don’t take offense. The thing is, I really expected to love this YA Mystery that follows teenage descendants of Holmes and Watson. I just didn’t. I was so bored. I didn’t feel connected to any of the characters. I didn’t like them. I didn’t care what happened to them and I found nothing intriguing about the mystery. The only good thing for me is that I was able to take the rest of the series off my tbr list. Again, I generously gave this 3-stars. The writing was perfectly fine it was just the content that disappointed me.
  4. The Beast Within: A Tale of Beauty’s Prince (Villains #2) by Serena Valentino – This is the second book in Disney’s, Villains series, which essentially tells the origin story of some of the world’s best known villains. I read the first book in the series in 2017 and really enjoyed it. That one told the origin of the Wicked Queen and although I did find the writing a bit immature, there were some really cool, original ideas added to her story. That’s what I expected going into this one as well. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairytale and man, did this one disappoint me. It was SO terrible. Beast’s character was awful! I felt like writing an anonymous, heartfelt letter to Beauty and telling her to stay away from him. He had no redeemable characteristics whatsoever. I hated him. The end. Moving on.
  5. Hunting Annabelle by Wendy Heard – This was actually one of the last books I read in 2018 and again, major disappointment. The synopsis for this sounded so good. A psychotic serial killer type person, a missing girl, did he do it, did he not. It sounded trippy and creepy and I got that for about the first 25% of the book and then it just got too weird. Think of the plot lines of like As The World Turns circa 1987 and then add some bullshit to it (ahem, more bullshit). I mean, just blah. It lost my interest with it’s ridiculousness and never gained it back. The writing, again, was good. It wasn’t the writing, for me it was what I consider to be very weak content. I’m not sure what the author was thinking for this one. But, you know what, it has worked for a lot of people because the overall rating on Goodreads is currently 3.81, so what the hell do I know? Take it with a grain of salt.

Top 5 Wednesday: Hyped 2019 Releases I Don’t Care About

Hey bookworms! It’s Wednesday and time for my first ‘Top 5 Wednesday’ post of 2019. Top 5 Wednesday is a Goodreads group that has a topic for each Wednesday of the month that bloggers, reviewers, BookTubers, etc., can discuss. This week’s topic is: Hyped 2019 Releases That I Don’t Care About.

 

 

 

 

 

 

First, let’s just get out of the way that even if I don’t necessarily care right now about a given book, doesn’t mean I won’t care about it in future. Also, if you really care about any of the books listed below, please don’t take offense. It’s not that I think they will be bad and it certainly is no shade on these authors, just for me, they aren’t something I will be picking up anytime soon.

With that lovely caveat out of the way, in no particular order, let’s get into my list:

  1. King of Scars (Nikolai Duology #1) by Leigh Bardugo – This is a BIG one. Probably one of the most hyped books of the year. Leigh Bardugo is an incredible writer and I’m sure this book is going to be sensational. Someday, I will read this, however, I have NEVER read a book set in the Grisha Verse (Bardugo’s fictional world). I need to read the Grisha Verse trilogy and the Six of Crows duology before I can even think about picking this one up. The good news is that I do own them both, so I am set up to someday be reading this book. It just may take a while, therefore I give zero F*s about it now.
  2. Enchantee by Gita Trelease – This book has been all over BookTube for a while, since the ARCs went out a month or so ago. This book is set in late 1700s Paris and involves magic and stuff. I don’t know. I guess it is kind of a magical alternative history sort of story. I have read the synopsis multiple times and get bored after the first few sentences so just feel like this book and I wouldn’t get along. Seriously, after reading the synopsis like 5 times, I still have no clue what this book is about. Therefore, don’t care. Maybe after more of my friends read it and get their reviews up I will be tempted to pick it up. Until then, meh.
  3. The Beautiful (The Beautiful #1) by Renee Ahdieh – I don’t know, vampires. I just don’t care about a vampire story right now. Unless it is Dracula or anything written by Stephen King (i.e. Salem’s Lot or Doctor Sleep), I’m pretty much over it. I guess once some of my book friends read it, if they love it, I could be convinced to check it out. Currently though, my feelings on this are pretty, meh. Also, I have never read anything by Ahdieh, so that probably influences a bit as well.
  4. Descendant of the Crane by Joan He – Again, as with Enchantee, the synopsis doesn’t even hold my attention, let alone reading a 400-page book about it. Something about a Princess who’s Father is killed and a soothsayer and some magic, I don’t know. The cover is GORGEOUS though so don’t be surprised if some day, regardless of my lack of interest now, this one ends up on my shelf. 
  5. The Red Scrolls of Magic (The Eldest Curses #1) by Cassandra Clare – Okay, now this one, I can see as being the most controversial but, in my defense, I have only read one book that takes place in Shadowhunter World, so I would have a long way to go before I could ever pick this book up. Therefore, because of that, this one is barely a blip on my radar. I have read, Clockwork Angel, which I did love and I do plan to complete that triology and then move on to The Dark Artifices. I will probably never read The Mortal Instruments series though. I just feel like I am too old for it and Urban Fantasy isn’t really my thing unless it is set in Victorian London or somewhere atmospheric like that. So, Cassie Clare fans, don’t hate me, I do like her writing and definitely want to pick up more from her in future, I am just not completely invested in that world yet.

Hey bookworms! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and is feeling charged about the New Year. I know I am ready to tackle all of my bookish goals. One of my goals is to add more creative content to my blog – something besides reviews – so with that in mind, I thought I would start with sharing my Christmas book haul. I was so lucky to receive A LOT of books for Christmas so I am not going to go into detail into each and every book. Hopefully once I read them I can provide you more detail in a wrap-up or review. 2019 Monthly TBR Challenge & Happy New Year

Happy New Year’s Eve bookworms! Cheers to a festive and happy new year! I am so ready for 2019~

Inspired by a recent video that I watched on the channel, Hailey in Bookland ((click on the channel name to view her January TBR)), I have decided I am going to institute a monthly TBR challenge.

Basically, this involves 5 challenges I need to complete every month. This will be in addition to any ARCs I will be reading for a particular month. The 5 challenges are as follows:

  1. Read a book that was released in 2018
  2. Read a new release from the current month
  3. Read a new release from the next month (I can use any ARC for this)
  4. Read a sequel to a series you have started but haven’t finished
  5. TBR Jar picks

*A note on the TBR Jar picks: Today I created my first ever TBR jar. I wrote down on scrapes of paper pretty much all the books that I own on my ‘unread’ shelf ((over 250)) and put them into a decorative box. Every month I will be pulling 3 random slips from the box and trying to read two out of the three. I just selected my three books to choose from in January and they are as follows:

  • An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson- YA Fantasy released in September 2017.
  • A Thousand Nights by E.K. Johnston- YA Fantasy Retelling released in October 2015.
  • The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin- YA Paranormal Romance/Horror released in September 2011.

I haven’t quite decided yet which 2 of the 3 selected I am going to read yet but I am leaning towards, An Enchantment of Ravens and The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. I will certainly keep you posted on that. Every month I am going to try to complete all of the challenges listed above and I am hoping this will help me keep focused, as well as helping to clean up my backlist a little bit.

Thank you so much for sticking with me over the course of 2018! I completed 139-books this year and am absolutely blown away by that number. Looking forward to seeing what I can accomplish in 2019. Best wishes to you all and happy reading~

 

Bookish Regrets: The Ones That Got Away

Good day bookworms! As you can tell from today’s title, this post is all about my bookish regrets. The books I wish I would have read in 2018 but never got around to actually picking up. In an effort to keep this post a reasonable length, I have narrowed my list down to the top 6. Without further ado, here are the books that got away from me this year:

  1. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black (Release Date: January 2, 2018) – This was one of my most anticipated books of 2018. I received it in my January OwlCrate box. I was so excited. Jumped up and down. Never read it. What gives, Meg? Seriously? For those of you who may not be familiar, this is a YA Fantasy book that follows a girl, Jude, who must live in the Faerie world after her parents brutal murder. Holly Black is queen of the Fae and I have heard pretty much nothing but good things about this. The second book in the trilogy, The Wicked King, is releasing on January 8, 2019.
  2. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (Release Date: February 27, 2017) – This YA Contemporary story topped the NY Times Bestseller lists too many times to count. This story follows 16-y.o. Starr Carter after she witnesses her childhood best friend, Khalil, get shot by a police officer. Khalil doesn’t survive and soon his story is headline news. Starr, as a consequence, is torn between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. This book has been adapted to the big screen which was released in October. I would like to see the movie but definitely want the opportunity to read the book first. With an overall Goodreads rating of 4.56 out of 5-stars, this is one the, if not the, highest rated book on this list.
  3. Everless by Sara Holland (Release Date: January 2, 2018) – The premise of this YA scifi/fantasy story is one where a world is run on a currency of time. The rich are able to tax the poor into the ground, extending their own lives by centuries. It sounds a bit like the 2011 movie, In Time, starring Justin Timberlake but more fantasy world focused as opposed to dystopian. As you may recall if you follow my reviews, I am a sucker for any story that examines time, whether it be in creative ways like this or more mundane uses such as time travel, jumps or loops. Either way, I was so excited for this book to be released and got it almost right away. Did I ever pick it up? No. No, I didn’t. Also, it is important to note that the next book in the duology, Evermore, is releasing on December 31, 2018, and yes, I have preordered it.
  4. Wildcard by Marie Lu (Release Date: September 18, 2018) – I was so pleased to see that one of my most anticipated book releases of 2018, if not the most, was being released on my birthday. I ordered in months in advance. This is the second book in the Warcross duology. Since Warcross was my favorite YA release of 2017, I had been chomping at the bit for this one. Alas, I still haven’t read it. Why do I fail at life?  
  5. Children of Blood & Bone (Legacy of Orisha #1) by Tomi Adeyemi(Release Date: March 6, 2018) – This debut YA Fantasy novel was easily one of the MOST hyped books of 2018. I had preordered a copy well in advance of the March release date with the full intent of reading it directly upon receipt. Well, it made this list so I think you can see how well that plan went. This story follows Zelie as she tries to bring magic back to her world. Based on Nigerian folklore, I have really heard nothing but good things about this one. I can’t really explain why I never ended up picking it up. It is quite large, coming in at 525-pages, so maybe subconsciously I was avoiding that commitment. Either way, I definitely NEED to read this in 2018 before the sequel releases in March.
  6. Truly Devious (Truly Devious #1) by Maureen Johnson (Release Date: January 16, 2018) – This is another book that I purchased right around its release date. This is a YA Mystery book that is set at a private school in Vermont. If you follow my reviews at all, you may recall that boarding school or private school stories are some of my favorite. I’m not sure what it is about them. Something about the teen dynamic in an environment with fairly minimal adult supervision that I find extremely entertaining. Basically you know some messed up stuff is going to go down when kids are left to their own devices. This story sounds so interesting. It basically involves a cold case from the time the school first opened. A new student, Stevie Bell, a true crime lover, decides she is going to solve the case but once she starts looking into it, the killer apparently returns. This book has a sequel releasing next month (January 2019) and I have already preordered it so I definitely need to pick this one up ASAP. I know I am going to love it. I have heard great things about the audiobook so I am end up reading this first one via that format.

I am hoping to get to most of these within the first quarter of 2019; especially the ones with sequels releasing this year that I plan to read! What books got away from you this year? Top 5 Wednesday: Most Anticipated 2019 Releases

2019 is looking like it is going to be an epic year for new releases. I have so many books on my tbr already that narrowing down all of them to a top 5 is a daunting task. I have decided to just focus on the first quarter of the year and only one genre to generate my top 5. The five books listed below are all being released sometime between January 1, 2019 and April 30, 2019. The genre I have selected is YA Fantasy. Without further ado, here are my top 5 selections:

  1. Slayer by Kiersten White (Release Date: January 8, 2019) – If you were ever a fan of the hit series Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, you are probably aware that this book is coming out very soon. I was so pumped when I heard of this book’s existence. First of all, Kiersten White is a hugely popular author and this, a whole new story taking place within the Buffy universe, yes, sign me up! Side Note: ((aka super exciting news)) I was alerted today by the publisher, Simon Teen, that I actually have won a pre-release copy through a Twitter Sweepstakes I entered so should have a copy of this shortly! You better believe I will be reading it in January!
  2. White Stag (Permafrost #1) by Kara Barbieri (Release Date: January 8, 2019) – The last child in a family of only daughters, 17-year-old, Janneke is being raised to be a male heir. While her sisters are training to be good wives and loving mothers, she is being taught to hunt and fight. After her village is attacked, Janneke, the only survivor, is taken prisoner by the evil Goblin King, Lydian. As she finds herself becoming more monster than human, Janneke begins to question who she really is and where she truly belongs. You guys, this books sounds action-packed and brutal and that is totally my aesthetic. Side Note: I am lucky enough to have been included in the Blog Tour for the release of the book so stayed tuned for that in the beginning of January!
  3. A Curse So Dark & Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer (Release Date: January 29, 2019) – Beauty & the Beast retelling. Need I say more? I discovered Brigid Kemmerer this summer when I read her deeply moving YA Contemporary, Letters to the Lost. I was drawn in 100% by her writing and truly loved the story that I was told within those pages. I pretty much decided after that I would read anything this lovely lady produces. I have pre-ordered this and will most likely drop everything once it arrives and get to reading! 
  4. Sherwood by Meagan Spooner (Release Date: March 19, 2019) – Speaking of retellings, I read Meagan Spooner’s retelling of Beauty & the Beast, Hunted, earlier this year and gave it a full and enthusiastic 5-star review. It was so dark and so twisted; as you know, also my aesthetic, that I was over the moon when I discovered Spooner had a new retelling being released in 2019. This sounds so good, you guys. Basically, this is a re-imagining of the story of Robin Hood. In this tale, after the untimely death of Robin Hood, his fiance, Maid Marian dons his green cloak and takes up his bow to fight for the people of Nottingham. Marian needs to become her own hero. In Hunted, one of my favorite aspects was how Belle was no longer a damsel in distress. She saved her own damn self and it was awesome. I know I am going to love this one just as much!
  5. Wicked Saints (Something Dark and Holy #1) by Emily A. Duncan (Release Date: April 2, 2019) – Firstly, let’s get out of the way right now, this book has one of the most beautiful covers I have ever seen. I love the stark white background and then the image of the majestic castle and the font with what looks like blood dripping down off of it. Hello. Heart eyes. I love you. The main tagline for this book reads: “A girl who can speak to the Gods must save her people without destroying herself.” Then she meets a boy. They must save a Prince. Danger lurks around every corner. There is an assassination plot. I mean, this sounds spectacular. I was so excited to be asked to take part in the Blog Tour for the release of this book. My post date is April 12th and I can’t wait to share my thoughts on this one with you all. I am going to try like heck to hold out on reading this until March but truth be told, I don’t have the best will power when it comes to anticipated books and I already have a copy so…

What’s on my Christmas List ((Part II))

Last week I wrote a post that highlighted a few of the books on my Christmas wish list. It’s time for some more. I have been on a self-imposed book buying ban for a couple of months now so I am just itching for some new books. Granted, I have cheated just a wee bit but that being said, I have definitely cut down and for that, I am proud.

Here are a few more bookies I have been dreaming of however:

The Way of Kings (Book One of the Stormlight Archives) by Brandon Sanderson – Brandon Sanderson is a very beloved fantasy author. He writes mostly adult epic fantasy and I have really been wanting to get into his worlds. One of my favorite Booktubers, Regan, from Peruse Project, raves about him all the time and I want to be a part of that. This is the first book of the Stormlight Archives which currently has three books released. This one is just over 1,000 for the paperback edition so definitely not a light undertaking. I know nothing else about the series and don’t really care to; if Regan recommends it, that’s good enough for me.

Next up is The Shuddering by Ania Ahlborn. I read my first Ahlborn a few months ago and was drawn in by her story and writing style. Additionally, it was nice to read a horror novel by a woman author as there aren’t many of them out there. This book follows a group of friends on a snowboarding weekend at a remote mountain cabin in Colorado. After a blizzard leaves them stranded, they discover they may not be alone in the mountains, and the horrors begin. I love reading wintery books in the winter. There’s nothing better than being snowed in a warm house with a chilling book!

Moving on, let’s go with something from my wish list that is a little lighter, both in content and size. How about a YA Contemporary? I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman follows Angel Rahimi, a teenage fangirl, who finds herself thrust in the life of her favorite band’s front man. This book gets great reviews and I enjoy reading books about fandoms. Although I have never been much of a fangirl in a ‘music’ sense, I definitely know what it is like to fangirl over certain authors or geeky scifi pop culture.

Staying in the YA genre, another book high up on my Christmas wish list is The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is one of my all-time favorite classics and this book, which released this Fall, is a re-imagining of that tale. Following the perspective of Elizabeth Lavenza, a girl who lives and works in the house of Victor Frankenstein, this story has received fairly strong reviews but I would like to decide for myself. This cover is the most gorgeous shade of pink and I need this to grace my shelves!

Lastly, let’s talk about The Boneless Mercies by April Genevieve Tucholke. This is a YA standalone fantasy that has been dubbed a retelling of Beowulf. This story follows a band of mercenary girls in search of glory. There are monsters and girl power and the cover is divine and I WANT IT!

What’s on my Christmas List? ((Part I))

Welcome Bookworms to the first installment of what’s on my Christmas list and why it should be on yours! I thought I would choose a few books off my Christmas list and go over them a wee bit. All anticipated books that I just haven’t gotten to this year but would love to add them to my shelves.

  • The Window by Amelia Brunskill – This is the story of Anna & Jess. Identical twins who may look alike but are different in many ways. They are very close however and tell each other everything, or so Jess believed. When Anna falls to her death sneaking out her bedroom window, Jess isn’t so sure she knew her twin as well as she thought. She sets out to discover her twin’s secrets but may regret that once all is said in done. This YA Thriller released in April of this year and just sounds like a very compelling plot to me. I believe I first heard this talked about on Chelsea Palmer’s channel on Booktube. I have wanted to read it ever since!
  • Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend – This is the 2nd book in the Nevermoor series, a middle grade series reminiscent of Harry Potter. I have the 1st book in the series and although I haven’t read it yet, I just know I am going to absolutely love it when I do and will want the second one to read right away. All talk I have heard of this series is absolutely glowing and I can’t wait to start it. Anything involving kids, a magic competition, a magic school, I will buy, I will read and I will tell you what I think about it! Yes, please, I want this book!
  • The Devil’s Thief (The Last Magician Book #2) by Lisa Maxwell – As with Wundersmith, this is the 2nd book in a series I haven’t started yet but know I will love. The reason I haven’t read The Last Magician yet is because I was waiting for this 2nd book to come out. This is a YA Fantasy novel that is full of magic and involves one of my favorite tropes: time-travel. I believe it begins in modern-day NYC and then travels back to 1902-NYC. It sounds incredible and gets very solid reviews on Goodreads & Booktube. I am ready for this one!
  • The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James – This YA Scifi Thriller follows Romy Silvers, who finds herself alone on the spaceship, Infinity, after her parents’ tragic deaths. She tries to make the best of her horrible situation and wait out her rescue by a nearby ship, Eternity. She even starts exchanging messages with that ship’s Captain, the mysterious J. As the Eternity gets closer however, Romy thinks something may be amiss. This sounds soooooo good. I love me some ‘lost in space’ adventures and this one has a really compelling synopsis. From what I have heard it is pretty stellar scifi and I def want to check it out for myself.
  • These Rebel Waves (Steam Raiders #1) by Sara Raasch – Pirates. Need I say more? Yes, you want me to say more? Okay, here goes. Words that jumped out at me from the synopsis include: Soldier, oppressor, Council, dangerous, outlaws, magic plants, black market, abduction, heretic, forbidden, shocking and conspiracy. I’m like…
  • Kill Creek by Scott Thomas – This book has been cluttering up my Instagram feed since last Halloween and it is high time I find out what all the fuss is about. A haunted house tale that follows a horror author who gets invited to spend Halloween night at said house. Three other authors join him on that fated night and what starts out as a fun adventure soon turns into a fight for survival. Yep, that definitely sounds like something I would enjoy. Plus the cover is bloody fantastic. I need this beauty on my shelves!
